Older homes are notorious for having awkward layouts. The Hudson Valley has many styles and ages of homes. Often when there a tight spaces, our modern needs don’t match the space. Trying to meet code requirements and create a space within a budget in these situations can be even more challenging.

As we began to discuss this bathroom, it became obvious that there would be some constraints with space if we didn’t want to move the window. In the existing space the shower was extremely tight to the window, and the homeowner loved having the storage in the space for linens – so we knew that we were keeping a closet.

Additionally, we discussed finding a more elegant solution for the radiator. There are flat panel hydronic units available that look much nicer and take up less room while providing efficient heat. This upgrade meant more efficiency of space and also a better heat output for those cold upstate New York winters.

To solve some of the major issues with space, we decided to flip the closet and shower.

This allowed us to keep linen storage, while offering a larger space for the shower. It also allowed us to keep the window unit and focus instead budget for new radiator units.

The additional space at the shower was felt immediately.

I just love the large format tile that was chosen. The space feels modern, updated, and fun.

The random pattern at for the floor tile drove our lead carpenter a little crazy during the install but I think it was worth the attention to detail. The client loves the randomness of the tile and it’s just the way they wanted.

While we couldn’t add more square footage, the space now feels more intentional and has better flow.

The clean lines and sleek solution for the radiator gave the illusion of a bigger space.
