Modern(ish) Remodel in Salt Point

When I first met my client, I instantly felt excited to work with her. She’s hilarious and I loved every moment we spent together from the Comprehensive Project Evaluation process to the final project. And it certainly helped having this handsome fella along for the meetings too!

When we first met, my client knew what she wanted but was unsure of the execution or construction parts. She understood the problems with the current layout and wanted to make improvements. One major struggle for her was front entry. Often she isn’t home and packages sit on the doorstep – to the mercy of the elements. She wanted to have a covered space.

She also wanted a less awkward entrance. This would allow guests to remove coats without feeling like they had to walk up or downstairs first. The current landing was small. With the new design, we also didn’t want to completely change the front of the house. We decided to push the front out within the current footprint. This would create more space but also keep costs lower from a construction standpoint.

The house as she bought it is very traditional. Yet, my client prefers a modern style and approach. She wanted to marry some of the classic features of the home with modern updates. We decided to add a new window and keep the prairie style grilles. But we agreed on a more modern door and garage door. We opened up the wall and updated the stairs to create a more airy and clean vibe.

The amount of light coming in removed the cramped feeling and the transformation was immediate. We went with a flat roof at the portico. This creates a rectilinear modern shape while allowing more light into the entryway.

When we first spoke, her concern was about elderly family members accessing the steps from the driveway. So we needed to make sure that the walkway was smoothly integrated.

It feels magnificent at night as well!!

The staircase feels grand and much more welcoming.

This job also included an update to the basement. We added a small bathroom and a bedroom with egress.

The flooring chosen by my client is a beautiful hickory-look luxury vinyl that I can’t get enough of!! The doors mimic the exterior entry doors and stay with the modern style.

This project had a few surprising twists. While there was no mold or mildew odor, the demo revealed a major water problem. We put in drainage and removed a lot more of the previously finished basement walls than was originally anticipated. My client knows the problem is taken care of and her space is almost complete! I’m excited for final pictures … stay tuned!!
